Addressing the Learning Crisis
Despite the government’s dedicated efforts, gaps in education delivery and learning continue to persist in Mizoram:
- 1 in 6 pupils cannot read a Std II passage, even after completing primary schooling.
- One third of all Std III-IV pupils cannot solve basic arithmetic problems like subtraction.
- 7 in 8 pupils cannot recognise numbers up to 99, even by Std. V.
- Only 2 out of 3 pupils who start Std I in Mizoram are expected to finish Std V.
- On average, 8.1% of Std I-V pupils drop out of school.
- Pupils in Std I in private schools perform between 16-18 percentage points better than pupils in government schools in literacy and numeracy tasks, highlighting the learning gap between private and government schools.
By treating learning as a science and learning gaps as an emergency, LIFTMizoram will enable the government to rapidly transform public education, paving the path for a more equitable and prosperous society.
